Marriage

We have decided to get married last year but there were no engagement rings, no overseas pre-wedding photo shoot, no diamond rings, no solemnization package, no bachelor nights, no bachelorette (hen) parties, no gatecrashing, no brothers, no sisters, no five star hotel wedding banquet, no food waste, no honeymoon and we have no problems.

Apart from the engagement rings having no legitimate utility, I couldn't find any reason to participate and partake in the whole shebang. This is not entirely about the unscrupulous marketing campaign of the DeBeers corporation nor a moral argument about the blood diamonds. And the fundamental reason why I choose not to participate is about values. To put it simply, my values are just different, neither better nor worse than anyone else.

And I still have no idea why the society has turned out the way it is today

Once again, the answer is simple. Because it is simple.
